Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
If a 56k modem is connecting slowly or there are frequent diconnects, what can be done to improve the performance of the modem?
First, try to check your dialer settings.
Phone lines, old wiring, equipment between the house and the telephone company can also cause slower connections. If there is static or noise on the phone line, call your Telephone Company.
Some modems may not meet the latest industry standards and cause disconnects.. To fix this, visit www.56k.com , click on upgrades, and follow the directions. If you can't stay connected long enough to download the drivers, you might be able to shutdown the 56k on your modem temporarily. To do this:
- Double click on My Computer
- Double click on Dial-up Networking
- Single click on altelco dialer
- Click on File
- Click on Properties
- Click on Configure
- Click on Connection
- Click on Advanced
- Fill in the Extra Settings box with at-v90=0
- Click on OK
- Click on OK
If the above does not work or an error message appears, try it again, but put at+ms=v34 into the Extra Settings box. If this also fails or does not resolve the problem, follow the above steps and blank out the Extra Settings box.
If it does work, this indicates the modem has the 56k bug. Go to www.56k.com and download the latest drivers for your modem. Once you have installed those drivers, follow the above steps and blank out the Extra Settings box.
